Densitometer

A practical introduction to using densitometers to control ink density, tone value increase and trapping on press.

A densitometer turns the apparent lightness or darkness of a printed patch into a repeatable number. In the pressroom, that number gives an operator a fast way to monitor ink film, tone value increase and trapping—before a small drift becomes visible across a run.

For printed work, a higher reflection-density reading generally means that more light is being absorbed by the inked patch. It is a valuable process-control signal, but it does not by itself confirm that a colour is correct: density describes optical strength, not hue.

Types of densitometer

Most instruments fall into one of three useful groups:

  1. Transmission measures light passing through film or another transparent material. It is mainly associated with film and plate workflows.
  2. Reflection measures light reflected from a printed surface. This is the instrument most often used to control CMYK work on press.
  3. Spectrodensitometers combine densitometric functions with more advanced colour measurement, making them useful when a job needs both process control and colour evaluation.

Use density to keep the printing process stable—not as a substitute for judging colour.

What a reading can tell you

Set targets for the actual job: substrate, ink set, screening, press condition and viewing standard all matter. A reading that is appropriate on coated stock may be wrong for uncoated paper or newsprint. Calibrate the instrument, agree targets during make-ready, then compare each later reading against that agreed baseline.

On a modern print job, a densitometer can help monitor solid ink density, tone value increase (often called dot gain), print contrast and trapping. A change in density can point to a change in ink film or concentration; a change in tone value increase can point to pressure, blanket or packing conditions; poor trapping can signal trouble in overprint colours.

Measuring a colour bar

A colour bar—also called a control strip or proofing bar—sits in the trim area of a proof or press sheet. It provides known patches for repeatable checks without touching the live artwork.

  1. Calibrate first. Follow the instrument’s routine before taking readings.
  2. Measure the paper and solids. Start with the substrate, then read the CMYK solid patches against the job targets.
  3. Check the tints and overprints. Use the relevant patches to watch tone value increase, contrast and trapping.
  4. Adjust one variable at a time. Make a controlled press adjustment, then measure again rather than relying on visual comparison alone.
