Outlining converts editable type into vector paths. It is useful when letterforms need to be edited as artwork or when a supplier specifically requests outlined vector art. It is not a default cure for font handoff: a well-made press-ready PDF normally embeds the required fonts and keeps text searchable, editable in the source and better hinted at small sizes.
Before you outline anything
Keep an editable copy of the live type. Once converted, text loses its font and type controls; copy editing, language changes and typographic adjustments become expensive. Some fonts also restrict outlining under their licence.
Avoid outlining body copy, legal text and small type unless the production workflow specifically requires it. Outlined type can lose font hinting and may appear less sharp at small sizes or on lower-resolution output.
Create outlines in Illustrator
- Duplicate the text or save a version with live type intact.
- Select the type object you need to convert.
- Choose Type → Create Outlines (or use the documented shortcut for your platform).
- Inspect the result at final size, especially counters, overlaps and small details.
- Keep the outlined artwork as an Illustrator source or export it within the printer’s requested PDF workflow.
Choose the right delivery method
