What is Pantone / PMS?

A practical guide to Pantone Matching System colours, spot inks, CMYK simulations and choosing the right guide for print.

Pantone is a standardised colour language. In graphic design and print, PMS usually means the Pantone Matching System: a proprietary set of named and numbered colour standards that lets a designer, printer and client specify the same intended colour.

A Pantone reference is more than a colour picked on screen. The physical guide shows how a standard appears on a particular substrate, while its number provides a shared production instruction. This is especially useful for identity work, packaging and small-print jobs where a colour needs to stay recognisable across a long run or between suppliers.

Spot colour and process colour

A spot colour is a premixed ink printed as its own separation. It is often chosen for a logo, a flat brand colour, a metallic or a fluorescent ink—situations where a close, repeatable appearance matters more than reproducing a full-colour image.

Process colour builds an image from screened cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). It is efficient for photographs and complex artwork, but it cannot reproduce every Pantone spot colour. Some bright, deep or highly saturated colours sit outside the CMYK gamut, so a conversion should be treated as an approximation rather than a promise.

Specify a Pantone colour when the finished ink matters. Specify CMYK when the job will actually print in CMYK.

Choosing the right reference

Start with the print process—not the value in a design application.

  1. Formula Guide is the usual starting point for selecting and communicating Pantone spot colours. Check whether the guide is coated or uncoated, because paper changes the appearance of ink.
  2. Color Bridge compares a Pantone spot colour with its closest CMYK process simulation. Use it to set expectations before converting a spot colour to four-colour process.
  3. Process guides are useful when the job is CMYK from the outset and you need to choose a colour that can be achieved in that process.

A practical production check

Before sending artwork to print, confirm four things with the printer: the intended Pantone number, the guide and stock suffix (such as coated or uncoated), whether the colour will run as a spot ink or be simulated in process, and whether a hard-copy proof or drawdown is needed for approval.

Do not rely on RGB, Hex or CMYK values alone to approve a Pantone spot colour. Those values may be useful for another medium, but they cannot guarantee that a screen, proof and printed ink will look identical. For a CMYK conversion, use a current Color Bridge guide and approve the expected process result—not the original spot swatch.
