Rich black vs plain black

When to use 100K, when a rich black helps, and how to avoid registration, trapping and total-ink-coverage problems in print.

Black looks simple on a screen. In print it is a production decision. A file can contain a black made from the K plate alone, a black reinforced with CMY inks, or the special registration colour used for printer marks. They may all appear similar in a layout application, but they do not behave—or look—the same once ink meets paper.

The useful rule is straightforward: use plain black (100K) for small text, fine lines and small graphic details. Use an approved rich black only for large solid black areas that need more visual depth. Never use registration colour as design colour.

The four kinds of black to know

The values above are working examples, not a universal recipe. A printer may specify a different mix for uncoated stock, newsprint, digital output, packaging, a deep-black image or a profile with a lower ink limit. Their specification wins.

Why 100K is the right black for small type

Small text set in rich black has to register across several printing plates. Even a tiny shift between cyan, magenta, yellow and black can create coloured fringes or soften the letterforms. A 100K black uses only the black plate, so it is cleaner, sharper and more forgiving.

That applies especially to:

  • body copy, captions and legal text;
  • small logos, icons and line art;
  • fine rules and keylines;
  • barcodes and QR codes; and
  • reversed-out details, which should be tested on the actual stock.

Do not make a logo or text “richer” by assigning all four CMYK inks without checking the production requirements. More ink is not automatically a better black.

When rich black earns its place

A large background made from 100K can sometimes look charcoal rather than deep black, particularly beside a dense photograph or on absorbent paper. A rich black adds CMY beneath the K plate, increasing apparent depth and giving the press more ink to work with over a large area.

Rich black is a background treatment, not a default swatch for every black object. Use it consistently across adjoining image fades, panels and vector fields. If a CMYK image fades into black, sample the image near the edge and make the adjoining vector fill match the approved build. Otherwise, a seam can appear in print even when both areas looked identical on screen.

Control total ink coverage

The sum of CMYK percentages is called total area coverage (TAC), or total ink coverage. The example 60 / 40 / 40 / 100 has a TAC of 240%. A build of 100 / 100 / 100 / 100 reaches 400% before any spot colours are considered.

Too much ink can cause slow drying, set-off, muddy shadows, loss of detail and problems in finishing. The acceptable maximum varies by printing method and substrate, so use the ICC profile or output condition supplied for the job. If the printer has not supplied one, ask for a recommended rich-black build and maximum TAC rather than choosing one from an online swatch chart.

Registration colour is not a design black

Registration colour is a production-only swatch. It prints at 100% on every separation in the job—including spot-colour plates—and exists so crop marks, registration targets and similar printer marks appear on every plate. It is not a darker version of black.

Using it for artwork makes the job needlessly heavy and creates serious registration risk. It should never be used for body text, large backgrounds, rules or decorative elements. In most layout applications it is named Registration and is distinct from the normal [Black] swatch.

Check overprint deliberately

Many print workflows overprint 100K text by design. This can prevent white gaps caused by minor misregistration when black type sits on a coloured background. It also means the background colour will show beneath the black, which is usually expected for small text but should be verified in an overprint preview and a proof.

Overprinting is not a blanket fix. A rich black may overprint differently from a 100K black; large overprinted objects can change appearance; and white objects set to overprint can disappear completely. Inspect the separations and overprint preview before export, then confirm the intended behaviour with the printer for any non-standard treatment.

A reliable black workflow

  1. Ask the printer for the output profile, maximum TAC and preferred rich-black build before final artwork.
  2. Keep the document’s normal black swatch at 0 / 0 / 0 / 100 for text and fine vector detail.
  3. Create a separately named rich-black swatch only for the large areas that need it—never call both swatches simply “Black”.
  4. Match any image fade to the approved vector build, or keep the image edge clear of a solid black field.
  5. Use preflight and separation or output preview to check CMYK values, total ink coverage and overprint.
  6. Review a proof on the intended paper when the black is colour-critical or covers a substantial area.

Final preflight checklist

  • Small text, fine lines, barcodes and small logos are 100K—not four-colour black.
  • Large black fields use the printer-approved rich build and stay within the job’s TAC limit.
  • Adjacent raster and vector black areas have matching CMYK values.
  • No artwork uses the Registration swatch.
  • Overprint is intentional, visible in preview and appropriate for the objects involved.
  • The exported PDF is checked with the printer’s requested output settings.
